The Indianapolis Public Schools’ (IPS) board is getting a makeover come November. Four of the seven seats are up for grabs and only one race features an incumbent. We’ll conduct a more comprehensive dive into these candidates once more information about their intentions becomes available. For now, a quick look at who’s running for each seat.
At Large
Kenneth Allen (an incumbent), Deandra Thompson, and Carrie Harris are all vying for the single at-large seat.
- Kenneth Allen: Allen is currently in his first term on the board and seems all-in on the current direction IPS is headed with Rebuilding Stronger. Outside of his service on the board, he is a certified child and youth care worker with Indiana Youth Services.
- Deandra Thompson: Deandra Thompson is the Founder and CEO of A Learning Bee Academy. She has a long history in the local education sector, with stints at Starfish Initiative, Providence Cristo Rey High School, and Phalen Leadership Academies.
- Carrie Harris: We were unable to locate an online presence for Harris as of June 24.
District 1
Ashley Thomas is squaring off against Alan Schoff for the District 1 seat.
- Ashley Thomas: Thomas is the CEO of A.N.T. Foundation Consulting and an experienced community organizer who has held roles at RISE Indy and Stand for Children Indiana.
- Alan Schoff: Schoff is a public school parent and marketing professional. You can get a sense of his candidacy based on his Twitter activity.
District 2
Terrencio Davis, Hasaan Rashid, and Gayle Cosby make up the three-way race for district 2.
- Terrencio Davis: Davis is the boys basketball head coach for Thrival Indy Academy. He self-describes in his Twitter bio as a, “Father, son, coach, mentor, and lifelong east sider.”
- Hasaan Rashid: Rashid currently works in sales for Utility Pipe Sales and has decades of experience in sales at a variety of companies in the area. His LinkedIn post announcing his candidacy offered no particulars as of yet.
- Gayle Cosby: Cosby previously served on the IPS Board from 2012-2016, a stint during which she gained a reputation for being outspoken in opposition to the reform plans the district undertook at that time. She has worked in social services and as an IPS teacher.
District 4
Allissa Impink is running unopposed in District 4. She’s currently the Director of Family Philanthropy at CICF and has previously held positions at UNCF, with IPS as a special education teacher, and at the Department of Child Services.
She came ready with a campaign website when filing closed so it’s worth sharing this particular nugget that spells out her general intentions: “I will ensure that the district’s Rebuilding Stronger Plan is implemented as it was intended; I will advocate for equitable access to quality schools, ensuring all students have access to a quality education in every Zone, regardless of background or socioeconomic status.”
